20 000 Korean children were spread all over the world since the Korean War ended. Jung is one of them: he was born in Seoul in 1965 and was adopted by a Belgian family in 1971.

Adapted from the eponymous graphic novel, the film focuses on key moments in Jung’s life: the orphanage, his arrival in Belgium, his family life, his difficult adolescence… It tells us how events drove him to accept his mixing of sexes. Rootlessness, identity, integration, maternal love, as well as a reconstituted interbred family: these are some of themes tacked here with humor and emotion…

Amazingly mixing real images and drawn images, oscillating between present and memories and using occasionally historical or family archives, “Approved for Adoption” is an autobiographical animation story that explores new lands.

East-West: a story of acculturation.
