Qiu Ju’s husband Qinglai was publicly humiliated by village headman Wang Tang who is ready to make up for it, but Qiu Ju refuses his money and wants excuses from him. To achieve her ends she will contact all levels of the Chinese justice going from a court to another one, up to the Supreme Court. In her opinion, everybody’s honor is priceless…

I made this film with all the tenderness I got from the characters whose story I tell. If the audience feels it, I will then have the feeling my aim has been partly achieved… With this film I wanted to say that every Chinese, and not only the peasants, must do the same thing: they must fight for their rights to be respected, and in the process of achieving their aim they will learn to know themselves. Demanding is the beginning of democracy”. Zhang Yimou
