Sonthar Gyal was born into was born into an art teacher's family in the Tibetan region of Amdo, Qinghai Province. He studied fine arts at the Qinghai Normal University in Xining and later cinematography at the prestigious Beijing Film Academy. Upon graduation, he worked as a cinematographer and artistic director for a series of films and documentaries, many directed by Pema Tseden.
