Eldar Shengelaia was born in 1933 in Tbilisi. Son of film director and author Nikolaï Shengelaia and brother of filmmaker Gueorgui, he graduated from the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow in 1958. He has been a filmmaker ever since 1958, first at Mosfilm Studio, then later for Tbilisi-based Griuziya-film studio.
En 1976, il préside l’Union des réalisateurs géorgiens.
