Rashid Masharawi was born in Gaza in 1962 to a family of refugees from Jaffa. He grew up in the Shati refugee camp. At age 18, he started working in cinema. He directed his first documentary, Travel Document in 1986. Haifa was the first Palestinian film to be selected for screening at the Cannes.
