Yılmaz Güney was born in 1937 in Adana from Kurdish peasant parents. He started his career as an actor and script writer. He directed his first movie in 1968. He wrote many scripts and directed several movies (amidst them The Herd) while being in prison. He died in 1984 in Paris.
