Hou Hsiao-Hsien was born in Mei County, Guangdong province in 1947. After a short traineeship in a movie studio, he chose film studies. After learning production, directing and scriptwriting at Taipei’s World College, he first became filmmaker’s Lee Hsing’s assistant before assisting two of Taiwan’s most influent directors, Chang Pei-cheng and Hou Hsiao-hsien. He directed his first long feature, produced by Hou Hsiao-hsien, Dust of Angels, in 1992. He is also a film producer.
