Kitano Takeshi was born in 1947 in Tokyo. After a harsh childhood, he formed a comic duo with a friend, Two Beats. His acting part in Furyo for Oshima changed his life. He directed a first long feature, Violent Cop, in 1989, but only gained worldwide recognition with his 1993-released Sonatine. He directs both (commercial) gangster movies and more personal movies. Other than being a film director, he is also recognized as a presenter, actor, producer, artist, painter…
