Kim Ki-duk was born in 1960 in Bonghwa. At the age of 9, he moved with his family to Seoul. He studied at an agricultural college then worked in a factory. He was interested in painting from a very young age. He took screenwriting classes and started working in cinema without any experience. Kim Ki-duk is one of the best-known and appreciated Korean directors abroad. He died in Riga in 2020.
