Dang Anom

Dang Anom, the daughter of Sang Rajuna Tapa, is engaged to be married to a warrior, Panglima Malang. The sultan, who has fallen in love with her, takes her as his concubine against her will. Panglima Malang can do nothing about it but manages to get into the palace for a secret meeting with Dang Anom. Unfortunately, they are found out and the sultan condemns the lovers to a cruel death. In order to save his daughter, Sang Rajuna Tapa opens the gates of the fort and lets Majapahit’s army into the kingdom. The chaos which follows gives Dang Anom and Panglima Malang the opportunity to escape.

The films in the Malay language produced by the Cathay-Keris Studio in the 1950s and 1960s in Singapore were well-known for their “traditional” narration based on the folklore and Malay legends which originated in the precolonial Malay world. Shot during a period of the nation's construction within the area, these films use a musical accompaniment which was to be culturally rooted in the music from the Malay peninsula while at the same time expressing the aspirations of the area to postcolonial independence.
