A mother and her son have trouble communicating: she was born in Cambodia and he was born in France. He struggles to better communicate with her until she becomes severely ill. « Originally, My mother's Tongue was a soundtrack project. I first wrote the text as an open letter to my mother. I tried to analyze our difficulty to communicate that I have explained by the fact that we didn't really share a common language. I realized that the roots of the problem were much deeper, tied to our family history and to the violent history of her birth country: Cambodia. Then an initiatory journey started and led me to settle there. My mother passed away while I was working on the project. The soundtrack is about this journey. The idea of making it into a film came later. For me it was not about recording pictures. I had to find a device that would go along with the sound, without taking over. In short, I didn't want to create a film that you watch, but one that you listen to. I then decided to get the help of a visual artist whose work of digital drawing on photography I admire. » Jean-Baptiste Phou
