Pawo Choyning Dorji was born in 1963 in Darjeeling, India. He is a writer, photographer and filmmaker from the Kingdom of Bhutan. In 2012, he assisted Khyentse Norbu on Vara – A Blessing. In 2016, he produced a feature film, Hema Hema – Sing Me a Song While I Wait, which was well received at the Locarno and Toronto festivals. Lunana : A Yak in the Classroom is his first film as a director.
