In the 1960s, in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, a group of young people like to go around together. Most of these friends are Uzbeks but there is also a Greek and a Russian, Rodin, the film’s main character. Rodin is in love with Tania, but because of his job, he travels Central Asia putting out fires. So he is often separated from Tania. Without him, Tania becomes bored and one day she meets another man. Rodin will have to face facts, Tania doesn’t love him any more...

“The Lovers” contains all we need to know about the 1960s and also everything that generation wanted to say about themselves to their contemporaries, to those who came before and to those who were to follow. Friends and your wife are more important than family. You can’t choose family but you can choose your friends. What would the 1960s have been without that complete freedom of choice?

This was one of the last Soviet black and white films.
