Dawa travels from Peking to Lhassa in order to visit her grandparents. While taking care of her husband who is very ill and later organising his funeral, Dawa’s grandmother, Yixi Zhuoma, tells her about the three loves of her life. The first is Jiacuo, a muleteer from Kangba. Gongsa, the young master from Luoga Garden is also in love with her. Jiacuo and Yixi elope and get married. As a muleteer, Juacuo is used to an unstable lifestyle and is often away. As time passes, Yixi falls into Gongsa’s arms. The latter accompanies the Dalai Lama to India, taking their youngest son with him. Jiacua cannot bear the fact that Yixi has become Gongsa’s mistress. He goes back to his hometown, Kangba, with his elder daughter, leaving Yixi behind. Many years later, learning that Jiacuo is seriously ill, Yixi undertakes a difficult and dangerous journey to find him. On the way, she happens to meet a childhood friend, Songqiu, who becomes her third lover.
