Gang Chang-sik, a retired civil servant, lives with his wife, Na Gilsoon, who was struck by a cerebral haemorrhage a few years ago, and her carer, Yu Soo-ok, a Korean Chinese woman and illegal immigrant. One day, a bedsore develops on Na Gilsoon’s body. Even through Na Gilsoon is in poor shape, Yu Soo-ok insists on taking time off on weekends. Gang Chang-sik realises Yu Soo-ok has found a romantic interest. Later, he trails her to a dance hall and sees her dancing with a man. He can’t tell if he is gripped by jealousy or a sense of loss. Some time later, Yu Soo-ok decides to quit her job in order to enter a sham marriage so that she can get a new visa.
“A Bedsore” explores the characters’ delicate psychology as well as some incidents related to various issues such as older people, immigrant workers, marriage, and patriarchal traditions. As a result, the film seeks to reveal a cross section of society and offer a chance for us to confront our ontological concerns.
