Viviane Amsalem has been seeking a divorce for three years, and her husband, Elisha, does not agree. Now, in Israel, only rabbis can legalize a marriage or its dissolution, and this is only possible with the husband’s full consent. His cold obstination, Viviane’s determination to fight for her freedom and the ambiguous role of the judges shape a proceeding where tragedy vies with absurdity and where everything is jud ged except the initial divorce petition. The very essence of this story is tragic. The way it unfolds is absurd and sometimes ridiculous. The humour comes from this contrast.

“‘Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem’ represents the condition of women worldwide, wherever women - because they are women - are considered by the law and by men as inferior to men.” Ronit Elkabetz.
