Goichi Mizoguchi arrives at the idyllic Soenji Temple that houses the renowned Shukaku Pavilion with a letter of introduction from his late father, a humble, provincial monk and trusted friend of the Chief Priest, Tayama. Mizoguchi has been raised by his father in retaining an ideal image of Shukaku. Tourists visit the temple, a couple is having fun…Mizoguchi’s devotion to maintaining the purity of the pavilion becomes increasingly monomaniacal. One day, the young man surprises the monk in company of a woman. Mizoguchi resorts to a final, desperate act.
