Hayuta and Berl, pioneers, the very first militant founders of the new-born state of Israel, no longer recognize much of what was the ideal of their youth, in Israeli society today. After years of struggle, and dreams in common, their revolutionary project of constructing a wel- fare state, remains intact. If their bodies have now grown old, their hearts and minds have preserved the freshness of the utopian vision they had in their twenties. Worn out by irksome officialdom, tired of being relegated to the role of incompetent puppet citizens, they decide to treat themselves to one great gallant last stand.

“The creation of the state of Israel comes within the scope of a new, ideal society, which would be unique in history. It is a true revolt against a style of life which is conventional, alienating and exiling. This close relationship between their personal story and the story of Israel, between their personal development and their emotional attachment to the young state, transforms their disappointment in their personal failures into disappointment in the community, and into an even deeper disappointment in themselves.” Amir Manor
