Tokyo. An inflatable doll lives in the sordid flat of a man who is in his forties. She can neither talk nor move, but she is her owner’s sole companion. He talks to her, takes his bath with her and makes love to her every night after coming back from work. Yet, one day phantasm becomes true: the doll becomes alive and develops human feelings. Just as a new-born baby, she faces an unknown world she yearns to discover. She then ventures in the streets of the city, fascinated by all that she can see, but the people she meets are unable to explain to her what ‘to be alive’ means…She finds the answer when she enters a video club where she meets Junichi, the shopkeeper with whom she falls in love at once. The doll now works in the shop where she tightens her bonds with Junichi every day: they go and see movies and wander in the city…like a couple.
