Park / Kinoshita is a Korean young man forcibly enrolled in the Japanese army during the war, and as for the others, he is asked to return home after the defeat. He decides to live in Japan but when he wants to go back to his native country, he has to use forged papers. He is arrested as a spy and his story appears in all the headlines.

In this film, Kore-eda questions the place given to immigrants in Japanese society, and mentions the anti-Korean racism still enduring in Japan.
