Within the framework of a school project, primary education pupils breed a milk cow for one year; they name the cow Lola. The camera closely follows the children in their experience of novice breeders. The cow becomes important in their lives but when summer holidays approach, Lola must be sent back to the farm.

"When I was at university, Asahis News TV station had broadcasted a program about the first year of Harugumi class. These children’s faces left their mark on me and I thought I would like to try to film them.” Kore-eda H.

This is the debut documentary film by Kore-eda.
