When she was a young girl, Utena Tenjô was given a rose shaped ring by a mysterious prince. Ever since, she has secretly been in love with that young man, while at the same time she has wanted to look like him. After her parents died, she started lining at her aunt's. She has become a sportive and popular girl dressed as a boy. When she joins the Ohtori college, she naturally chooses to wear the boy's black and white uniforms. One day, her friend Wakaba is humiliated by Saionji, a member of the students council. Shocked by his behaviour, Utena challenges him to a duel. Saionji soon notices that Utena's ring has the emblem of Ohtori. Only council members are allowed to wear such ring. The two antagonists consequently position themselves on a strange fight ground. Other duels will take place and the winner will get the fiancée of the rose.
