Vong Poeuv, his wife Yim Om and their seven daughters live according to the growing of rice. Its unpredictable crop is a source of anxiety and joy; it is vital for the life of the whole family. When Vong Poeuv dies, his wife Yim Om has to manage by herself. She is unable to accept her husband’s death and slowly sinks into madness. The elder daughters take the destiny of the family.
"Rice People is a journey in the heart of Cambodian culture. Men and the paddy fields are one. Man cultivates earth and vice-versa. The dramatic framework of the film is the ancestral cycle of rice cultivation which regulates life with slowdowns and changes, loudly livening up paddy fields and then allowing us to hear the silence of nature…” Rithy Panh
