In the 3o's, when Kerala was still under the British rule, Kunhikuttan was an illegitimate child of a poor mother. Around the age of 10, he learns Kathakali, a form of theatre, dance and mime, under an exigent master. At the age of 18, he marries Savithri, never to find happiness despite Saradha, their playful daughter, who soon develops a passion for Kathakali. Although highly appreciated among professionals, Kunhikuttan leads a modest life and occasionally drinks with his three best friends: Raman, the chenda player, Govindan the manddalam player and Vasu, the singer. His encounter with Subhadra, an aristocratie young lady who seems lost between dreams and reality, shatters his life as she becomes a fervent admirer of Arjuna, the noble character he incarnates on stage.
