Daku , a young Balinese bachelor, lives in Jakarta with Sinta, his eleven-year old adoptive daughter. He works as ajournalist and has a relationship with Rosa, a young woman driven to prostitution for survival. He knows his mother is ill in Bali and when he gets a telegramfrom his native island, he does n't open it,fearing to know its content. His mother died. As the eldest son, he has to came back and perform rituals and prepare the cremation. Ali this can take months. For this man who has to fought to reach a decent social life, this is the end of a drea m, the end of his relationship with Rosa... This film is so anchored in Balinese roots - yet avoids cliché images for tourists - that it can astonish or even shock a western audience without expo sure to the specific cultural background of this Indonesian island. Once informed , the audience can better understand the main charac ter who, atfirst sight, could be mistakenfor an insensitive disgraceful man. A courageous film.
