Bagus is a young man who was thrown out of his native village Ponorogo seven years ago after his girlfriend Ayu got pregnant. Since that day he has been working as a handyman in a Jakarta brothel. Eaten up with remorse, he decides to go back home to try to redeem himself. In Ponorogo nothing, or almost nothing, changed with the village head vigilantly making sure the place would not give in to the modern world’s throes. Bagus tries to return to this tiny microcosm but his past soon catches up with him.
When it got released, the debut film of altogether actor, script writer and film maker Slamet Rahardjo Djarot was a sensation for its daring topic, its nihilistic representation of Oriental Java provincial life and, above all, for the originality of its direction. At a time when cinema is particularly controlled, Djarot innovates with his personal narrative of a broken up story and his treatment of the main character in a very detached way.
