Iskandar, a young medical student, goes to his fiancée family now that the war is over, hoping to reintegrate into society, to find a work and get married. He meets comrades-in-arms Gafar, a constructor leading a comfortable life, and Gunawan who took all the possessions of a woman he got arrested and executed by Iskandar, and who now runs a thriving business. Iskandar gets a job through his father-inlaw, but he cannot bear his colleagues. His fiancée Norma organizes a big party to celebrate his return. He leaves the party to see Puja, a veteran now working as security guard in a brothel. There, he meets young prostitute Laila who dreams of finding a husband to lead a stable life. He leaves for a very special mission. He comes back to Norma’s house and then runs away during the curfew.
Considered as one of the pioneer masters of Indonesian cinema, Usmar Ismail’s film is a realistic portrayal of soldiers coming back from war, as well as a tribute to them. Taken from the archives of the Indonesian Sinematek, the film was restored by the Singapore National Museum and the World Cinema Foundation.
