We are in Shanghai in the 30ies. Hui Man-keung, a member of national party Guomindang, was caught by the Japanese, with his comrades. He manages to escape and ends up on a Shanghai beach. All he can think about is to get his revenge. Ding Lik is the garbage man of a local mafia which he dreams to run. He is in love with Ching-ching, the daughter of Fung, one of the dons of this mafia. All the characters’ fate gets intertwined in the city of Shanghai so well reconstituted and shot with such perfect sense of aesthetics.
Both an action film and a fiction, Shanghai Grand was inspired by a successful TV serial; it is Tsui Hark’s last production before Hong Kong retrocession to China. The two Hong Kong big stars of the time Andy Lau and Leslie Cheung are playing together again after Days of Being Wild. The film is served by their stunning acting.
