Rubaiyat Hossain was born in 1981 in Dhaka. She holds a bachelor's degree from Smith College (United States) in feminism and a master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She lives between Dhaka and New York, directing films and studying film at the Tisch School of Arts at New York University.
In 2011, she shot her first fiction feature film, Meherjaan, then in 2015, Under Construction, which won awards at numerous festivals including the FICA where it received the International Jury Prize and the Émile Guimet Prize.
