The only son of a rich art collector, Machisu reveals a talent for painting early on in life. Encouraged by his close family, he paints on all possible occasions. But misfortune finally puts an end to his privileged childhood. Some years later, the young man, poor and on his own, manages to get a place in an art school. He undergoes severe criticism from an art dealer, but the undying support of Sachiko, an employee he has married, encourages him to continue on this course. By the age of fifty Machisu has still not sold any paintings. He remains, nevertheless, devoted to his art. Desperate for official recognition, will Machisu, like a new Achilles, manage to overtake the tortoise?
“As an artist you can be given rough handling by art dealers or else you need to fight against your own jealous feelings concerning other artists. Artists who find satisfaction in creation are not necessarily those who are the most well-known. While others, against all expectations, are successful when they produce works aimed at satisfying the buyers. There are so many paradoxes in the life of an artist.” Kitano T.
Does art help gain freedom? Living for painting does not necessarily mean earning your living FROM painting.
